The Short Answer
If your Tesla is parked in the sun or you feel heat on your head while driving, roof film is one of the most noticeable upgrades you can make. It can be almost clear, so the roof keeps its open feel.
Why the Roof Gets Hot
The Tesla roof glass is tinted from the factory and blocks UV, but on a sunny day it still lets through infrared heat, the part of sunlight you feel on your skin. The roof sits right above your head, so that heat is hard to escape. XPEL XR Plus nano-ceramic film rejects up to 96% of infrared heat, and XR Black up to 85%.
What Roof Film Costs
| Model | XR Black | XR Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Model Y / Model S | $729 | $899 |
| Model 3 | $280 | $350 |
| Model X / Cybertruck | $280 | $350 |
The Model Y roof is one very large piece of glass, which is why it costs more. Prices are before sales tax.
How Dark Should It Be?
Most owners choose a light shade on the roof. The heat rejection of nano-ceramic film is the same at any shade, so a light film keeps the sky view and still cuts the heat. Darker film adds shade and privacy if you want it.
Is It Safe for the Glass?
XPEL film has no metal, so it does not affect phone, GPS or key signals. The install is done in our clean, closed bay in North Hollywood and adds about an hour to a full Tesla tint.
Who Should Skip It
If the car lives in a garage and you mostly drive in the evening, you may not need it. Start with the side windows and the Rear Window, and add the roof later if the summer heat bothers you. See all Tesla prices on our Tesla window tint page.
